UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"This is a unique experience where a girl harboring several human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate souls, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

Once players believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
