One snub proved sufficient. A second one and it might have appeared vindictive from the England manager, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to realize that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require contributions by the talented midfielder, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to fit into the tactical structures and team pecking order essential with the national team now that he is returned to the manager's warm embrace.
Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is a matter of channeling it in the right way. Skill is important but England have learned the hard way that there is consequences when celebrity takes over. Still, a message has been sent.
The midfielder had much to ponder after being left out of the recent team selection. He watched the national side qualify at next summer’s World Cup without him. He watched Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as the coach discuss loving the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in top form, netting important strikes for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and the Italian side. He had to be picked; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.
The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder directed towards intimidating opponents instead of teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period not playing has shown him that representing the national team is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after proving that he is not afraid to make big calls.
“There is no problem with him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham possesses a competitive streak. You need that kind of fire to reach the heights that he has. Everyone must help him and create a setting where he can channel this edge towards opponents and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”
Bellingham took up most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming final group games against one opponent and the other. Who else? Indeed, how about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious No 10 requiring love and guidance. Foden has not played for England since spring and has struggled to hit the heights recently but the boss was impressed by the player after his display in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund recently.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be a good argument to include another youngster once he is fit after a fitness issue. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the tournament be too many? The previous manager never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, cramping the captain's game as a result.
It is hard to see the current manager doing similar if it harms the offensive structure. Space exists for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clarity helps. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for the City star, who must play central. The coach wants him near Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, can you play left wing? Or the right wing?” he said. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I have this vision regarding him for a long time. I think it suits him best.”
Tuchel conceded there are occasions when the player has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then clearly something is not right, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.
“I think he is also accustomed to playing for Man City in a certain structure, to have a defined role. I think he benefits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defensive duties?”
The manager discussed one star bursting through for easy finishes and the other netting goals from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his fine form for Manchester City at defense. Interest abounds.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at using the playmaker as a false 9 against Serbia or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options if Kane be absent. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for trying new things.
At the same time, it is also a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up Kane to net in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. The coach will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. The connection is missing.
“At this point at some point it falls to the duty of the individuals,” he stated. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of the player under scrutiny. He cannot even be assured to start versus the upcoming opponents. Tuchel wants Bellingham committed but he will be watching him closely. Leave self-importance outside. It will make a very strong England team into an superior one.
