While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life away from worry.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently named “6-7” its top term for the year.
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that bring people together. Every time, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
