The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected place.
Bashir's selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with Carse most likely to miss out if the spinner enters the starting XI.
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged several previous Tests.
In those games, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side relying on fast bowlers is still the probable choice.
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.
But the coach has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so opponents perform and excel out here.”
