The English golfer Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Battle Against Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed remarkable composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff following a topsy-turvy last day of competition.

Rai nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his only previous tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory against Fleetwood.

Final Round Drama

Rai entered the final round with a single stroke lead over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.

The challenger moved a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.

Playoff Climax

This led to a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was really special,” said the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Other Contenders

Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
