Should Bellingham wants to force his way into the English top starting eleven, the smart move to do away with the unnecessary reactions. His reaction when he saw that his number was about to come up after an evening of mixed performance in the match against Albania was unacceptable.
"I don’t want to blow it out of proportion but I stand by my words 'conduct is crucial' and consideration for the teammates who enter the game," commented the coach. "Choices are taken and you must accept them when you're on the field."
There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no call for an outburst. Kane had recently scored to make England two goals ahead in an inconsequential fixture, the game had six minutes to go and the player, following an inconsistent display, had just been booked for a foul on Armando Broja. This was hardly a debatable decision. Indeed it would have been unwise for the manager to not substitute him because there was a chance he would rule himself out of the first match of the tournament by getting a second yellow card.
Yet Bellingham turned the spotlight on himself. No one could overlook the player's annoyance as he realized that he would be substituted for Morgan Rogers. He threw his arms up and although he exchanged a handshake after making his way to the touchline there was no doubt that the manager was not impressed.
Here lies the test facing Bellingham. He applauded Marcus Rashford for sending in the ball for Kane to nod home his second goal, but the rest was harmful to his cause. It is not as if arguing was going to alter the decision. The German has repeatedly emphasized honoring the team structure and the necessity of behaving correctly.
He, left out of the team last month, has faced close inspection after returning to the team this month. Essentially his place has been in question and he hasn't helped his case with his response to his substitution as the side wrapped up a ideal group stage by defeating a feisty challenge from the Albanian team.
As a result it's unclear on whether England perform optimally when Bellingham plays. The evidence here was open to interpretation. There was experimentation from Tuchel at the start. He has provided the team organization and direction lately, building with a holding player, a box-to-box player, an attacking midfielder and dedicated wide players, but it felt different in this match. Quansah was handed his international debut, Adam Wharton made his first start at this level and the role of John Stones as a makeshift midfielder created a faint echo to the Manchester club's team that won three trophies.
His performance was inconsistent. He created an opportunity for his teammate after the break but frequently appeared too desperate to impress. He made many hurried and errant passes. There was a needless bit of aggro with a rival player at the beginning. The team looked disjointed for much of the second half. One Albania chance came after he lost the ball cheaply. The yellow card occurred when he lost the ball to Broja and committed a foul on the attacker.
Finally the squad's strength was decisive. Tuchel threw on the Manchester City player, who appeared more comfortable to the role occupied by Bellingham earlier in the match, and Saka. Later Saka provided a corner for the captain to break the deadlock. It highlighted that set pieces will be crucial at the World Cup.
Nevertheless, Bellingham was the story. The brilliance of the winger's delivery for Kane's goal was somewhat overlooked due to the fuss of the player change. When the match concluded, all eyes were on the midfielder. Tuchel came over to his side and pushed the Real Madrid midfielder in the direction of the English fans. Their connection is not broken. Tuchel hasn't decided to abandon Bellingham yet. However, whether the coach is prepared to give him the central position is not guaranteed.
