Excitement is building for the Stephen King adaptation It: Welcome to Derry, already garnering praise and weaving in themes from other Stephen King works. Now, the network has revealed that the second installment will arrive early, released fittingly for Halloween.
Beginning on October 31 at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, the second episode of Welcome to Derry will launch on the streaming service, ahead of its traditional TV airing. Subsequent episodes of the series run will continue to air on the weekend on the network and streaming service, culminating in the final episode on Sunday, December 14.
Set in the world of King's It, It: Welcome to Derry draws from the original story while building upon the universe established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the two It films. The original It centered on young characters facing unimaginable horrors, thus it's suitable that the prequel upholds that legacy. However, the debut of the HBO series shows it set out to increase the tension, offering heightened horror than the movies and creating a brutal tone for the rest of the season.
Set in 1962, the program presents a different group of adults and children residing in a outwardly charming locale masking a evil heart. The town operates on a cruel, recurring cycle—characterized by violence, bigotry, and the supernatural, as a evil entity resurfaces each 27-year cycle. Although It: Welcome to Derry might appear like it strays too near to the films at first, what distinguishes the HBO Max series is its dual perspective—unfolding through the viewpoints of young and old concurrently. Children remain highly exposed to the entity's fear, but grown-ups don't escape facing their individual fears arising from Derry’s deep-seated bigotry and hidden paranormal elements.
Episode 2 debuts on Halloween at midnight PT.
