The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This latest installment signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that kept me up at night," the actor reveals.
Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, despite meeting their demise in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should get ready for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first occasion since a small cameo is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the offer from the series creator.
"I recall the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.
"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he explains. "A part that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is in the same position like the rest of us to see the finished film. He admits to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who damages the popular franchise.
"The outcome is either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will be successful. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the franchise. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
While many dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Or, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a bizarre communal scenario. The possibility of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by classic genre films, also is on the table.
Audiences will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
