Former Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has pleaded not guilty to making false statements to congressional representatives and hindering a congressional proceeding.
Mr Comey's lawyer entered the answer acting as his counsel in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.
Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would attempt to have the case dismissed for various causes including that his defendant, a detractor of former President Trump, was being singled out.
Mr Comey was formally accused soon after Trump urged his top legal official to proceed against him.
In court on Wednesday, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald advised the judge they intended to file several petitions to terminate the legal matter before a court case, stating the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully appointed to handle the proceedings.
The former director's proceedings was originally overseen by Erik Siebert, who left his position under scrutiny from the former president after his examination into an additional rival - the New York official - was unable to bring criminal charges.
Mr Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the courtroom on mid-week, chatting with his attorneys and making jokes. He was supported by his spouse, his wife and daughter Maureen, a government attorney who the Trump administration terminated.
After listening to the court read his rights and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the allegations.
"Yes your honour. Thank you," he stated to the proceedings.
Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was fired about four months into the former president's first administration as national leader. At the time, he was leading an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the presidential campaign.
Throughout his leadership, the director triggered a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was probing presidential nominee Clinton's use of a private email server. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were not filed, resulting in criticism from Republicans as well.
Prosecutors allege Mr Comey provided false information to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he deceived the legislative body by stating he had not approved a person at the FBI to leak to journalistic entities information about the agency probes.
Government lawyers also charge Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to sway, hinder and slow" the panel by giving misleading testimony to it.
Through a recording the former director posted to his online platform after he was accused, he declared he was innocent and alleged Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".
"We have known for considerable time that there are consequences to standing up to the former president," he stated. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he added. "Thus initiate a trial."
The charges against Mr Comey emerged after the former president shared on digital channels insisting on his attorney general, Pam Bondi, charge the former director and additional individuals.
