The vehicles for the 2026 season are set to be lighter, more agile and sustainable than this year.

The world of Formula 1 has revealed the simplified language that will be used to describe the advanced features of its upcoming 2026 rulebook.

The sport is introducing what is potentially the largest technical shift in its long history next season, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the required adoption of eco-friendly fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which retain the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a substantially higher electrical capacity, necessitating significant developments in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

Throughout races, competitors will strategically manage electrical energy – including during qualifying laps – to extract the peak result.

Extensive fan consultation were undertaken with a diverse audience, including long-time followers and newcomers, to determine which terminology would make things clearer of the main elements of the 2026 changes.

The key objective was to make a set of intricate new areas of the racing as accessible as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, older technical labels for certain devices – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the active aerodynamics – have been phased out in favour of straightforward terms that directly explain the real-world effect of the innovation.

Exploring the New Tech

The FIA states that competitors will have increased agency to determine tactics regarding battery management, regeneration, and efficiency.

The new regulations introduce a set of functions that will be clearly indicated on television graphics to enhance the audience's understanding of the strategic duel.

  • Overtake Mode: This takes over from the current DRS. It provides a short boost of battery power accessible when a competitor is close behind the leading car to facilitate an pass.
  • Boost Mode: This is a on-demand power boost from the ERS that can be deployed for overtaking or defending. It grants the driver peak output at the activation of a control.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be managed carefully, as the overall battery capacity is strictly limited.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the car's wings change configuration – opening on the straights for reduced drag and higher speed, and angling down in the turns for peak grip.
  • Recharge: The system can replenish their battery with energy harvested under braking, or during partial power application at the conclusion of a straight or in sections where only limited engine output is used.

Car Design Evolution

The next-generation machines will be more compact and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a car length reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight lowered by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is expected to drop by approximately 15-30%, although teams will naturally regain performance as they refine their designs.

Aerodynamic drag has been slashed by 40%. The cars will feature active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will open on the straight sections to cut resistance and enhance velocity and click back into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will continue to use 18-inch rims, but the actual tyres will be reduced in width, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The 2026 engines will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the ICE and the battery and motor, up from about one-fifth electric power this year.

The hybrid system is simplified through the removal of the MGU-H, the intricate and expensive unit that generated electricity from the turbocharger.

Every car on the grid will be obliged to compete on carbon-neutral fuel, manufactured from organic sources or lab-created processes.
