No less than 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Security Action on Gangs

A minimum of 64 civilians died in a security raid cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's records.

Four police officers were among those killed during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, local authorities said. Over 80 suspects were taken into custody.

Fierce clashes commenced when approximately 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "shocked" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Operation Impact

The slum neighborhoods near the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Government representatives said no less than 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Locals have likened the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the raid started.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group have been expanding their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces stated over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the raid, together with multiple guns.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by various security forces follows a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are considered participants in an organization from the northern region who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
