NFL Postseason Scenarios: Key Deciders & Outcomes for the Season Finale.

NFL teams in action
Pittsburgh faces off against Pittsburgh to decide the AFC North, while San Francisco and Seattle meet for the top seed in the NFC.

Entering the final week of the NFL regular season, just two play-off spots remain open. However, a great deal more is at stake, including the highly desired #1 rankings in both conferences and four divisional crowns.

NFL schedulers have produced a dramatic finale, with the final two play-off positions to be decided in a pair of head-to-head contests.

Current NFL Play-Off Standings

American Football Conference Rankings

  1. Denver (13-3)
  2. New England Patriots (13-3)
  3. Jacksonville Jaguars (12-4)
  4. Pittsburgh (9-7) / Baltimore (8-8)
  5. Houston (11-5)
  6. Los Angeles Chargers (11-5)
  7. Buffalo Bills (11-5)

The victor of the Steelers-Ravens game will claim the fourth seed and a home-field advantage in the wildcard round. At the same time, Buffalo and the Chargers are locked in as wildcard entrants.

Houston need a victory and a Jaguars loss to climb from fifth to third. The Broncos will secure the #1 ranking with a triumph, but a setback could open the door for the Patriots or the Jaguars to claim it.

NFC Standings

  1. Seattle (13-3)
  2. Chicago (11-5)
  3. Philadelphia (11-5)
  4. Carolina (8-8) / Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-9)
  5. San Francisco (12-4)
  6. L.A. Rams (11-5)
  7. Green Bay Packers (9-6)

The South division is up for grabs by the victor of the Panthers-Buccaneers game, granting them the #4 position. However, the Panthers could still win the divisional title even with a defeat, depending on other results.

The Packers are set at the seventh seed. The marquee matchup, though, is the clash for the #1 seed in the NFC between the Seahawks and San Francisco, with a first-round bye and home playoff games on the line.

Understanding the NFL Play-Off Format

The #1 team in each conference receives a valuable first-round bye and home games throughout the play-offs.

On Wildcard Weekend, the remaining six playoff teams face off: the second seed hosts the seventh, #3 plays #6, and fourth hosts fifth.

For the Divisional Round, the #1 seeds join the competition, hosting the weakest surviving team. The AFC and NFC championship games are then hosted by the highest seed, highlighting the critical importance of securing that #1 ranking.

AFC North Decider: A Brutal Finale

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens (01:20, Monday)

This fierce grudge match reaches its climax in the final game of the NFL season. The divisional title and a postseason spot at stake, this is a genuine win-or-go-home scenario.

Pittsburgh have been inconsistent this season, while Baltimore started poorly but are still in contention. Player availability could be decisive: The Steelers may miss key target their top wideout, while the Ravens' signal-caller their MVP QB is questionable with a health issue.

Star rusher Derrick Henry might emerge as the x-factor for the Ravens in what promises to be a physical, defensive battle.

Battle for #1 in the NFC

San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks (01:00, Sunday)

More than just the NFC West is on the line when the Seahawks visits San Francisco. The winner secures the conference's #1 spot and the road to the championship game that comes with it.

This game features an high-powered 49ers offense against a stingy Seattle defense. With QB their young passer returned, the 49ers have been the NFL's top offense. Conversely, Seattle's unit is rated among the best in the NFL.

Seattle QB Sam Darnold must avoid mistakes that have haunted him this season. Whoever wins this clash earns a huge advantage for the postseason journey.

NFC South: A Race to Stumble Over the Line

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Carolina Panthers (21:30 Saturday)

Both clubs comes into this contest with much momentum. The Buccaneers have lost four straight, while the Panthers have squandered recent opportunities to secure the division.

For Carolina it's simple: win and they're in. For Tampa Bay, the situation is trickier. Even with a win, they require help from the Falcons-Saints game to steal the division crown.

AFC's Top Seed Up for Grabs

Tennessee Titans @ Jacksonville Jaguars (18:00, Sunday)
New England Patriots vs. Miami Dolphins (21:25, Sunday)
Los Angeles Chargers @ Denver Broncos (21:25, Sunday)

The Denver Broncos hold the cards for the #1 AFC spot. A victory over a L.A. Chargers team expected to sit starters seals it.

Should Denver falter, the opportunity arises for the Patriots. A Patriots win combined with a Broncos loss would give the top seed to Bill Belichick's team.

Jacksonville are the dark horse. They need a win and defeats for the Broncos and Patriots to pull off an improbable rise to the top. More importantly, a Jacksonville defeat could see them passed by the Houston Texans in the division standings.
