New Year's Celebrants Told to Bundle Up with Wintry Weather Expected Across the UK

Meteorologists are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected over large parts of the UK. Revelers have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Proceed In Spite of Alerts

Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to proceed, unlike last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Open but Frosty Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and open skies. Temperatures are forecast to be low, making additional clothing essential, as per forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

Readings Forecast to Plummet Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Warnings Issued

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
