“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” rang out through the City Ground as Forest fans reveled in a further success against their Swedish opponents. Much has transpired since Trevor Francis’s decisive header clinched the European Cup back in 1979, but the club still hold dear those memories. Similarly, major shifts have taken place in the weeks since the manager assumed control, with Forest appearing refreshed and earning a comfortable win thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, enhancing their hopes of advancing in the Europa League.
For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had not played for almost three weeks after finishing in sixth place in their domestic league – marked a third straight win across every tournament and added to the positive energy generated from the previous week's success at Anfield. While this fixture was a re-run of the club's historic triumph in name, the encounter itself was free of any real tension or jitters.
It proved to be an occasion dripping in nostalgia, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third competitive meeting between the sides since the showpiece event 46 years ago.
Forest leaned into the heritage, paying tribute to the legends of that era by providing them, along with their visiting opponents, the VIP welcome. 13 members of the Malmö's team from that time were additionally in attendance. Both teams enjoyed a dinner together before the kick-off. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and their teammates were given a tumultuous welcome when they assembled on the pitch a quarter of an hour before the start, and a typically superb tifo was unveiled in the Trent End.
“30th May 1979, John Robertson delivered the ball from the left flank,” displayed one part of a giant banner, in capital letters. While nobody needed reminding of what happened next, the remaining section was unfurled as the squads came out from the dressing rooms. “There is Francis,” it continued. Another stunning tifo showed Brian Clough observing proceedings beside his right-hand man Taylor on a dugout at the Olympiastadion.
So, Forest had soaked up those wonderful memories, but what about the showing on the evening? It was impressive, as well. They were in full command from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an effort wide inside the opening moments and built a 2-0 advantage by the break. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Zach Abbott, on his first European start, tried his luck.
It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who joined the club aged eight, made the first dent in the Malmö defense led by their own homegrown captain, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds and Brentford FC. The home centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a cross deflect off a opponent and into the path of Yates, who finished with his right foot from the edge of the penalty area to score his maiden strike since March.
The scorer was involved in the team's next goal on the brink of half-time, as well, his free header saved by the goalkeeper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to tap in the loose ball from close range. McAtee, the playmaker given a seldom start and just his second outing since September, was the catalyst, chipping a perfect ball towards his teammate at the back post.
Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was deflected wide off the defender Rösler, son of former Manchester City forward Uwe, and an unmarked Milenkovic had earlier had a strong header instinctively repelled by Ellborg, who was back in place of the former Aston Villa goalkeeper Olsen.
This was Malmö’s initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on November 9th, and they found it hard to equal the home team's intensity. The Reds extended the lead to three when Milenkovic applied the finishing touch after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a set-piece. Yates had a shot blocked, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic pounced on the rebound.
Forest then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a effort on to the bar before Ibrahim Sangaré sent an optimistic effort off target from 30 yards. It was one of those nights. Dyche, mindful of the upcoming league game here against Brighton, implemented multiple alterations from the team that stunned the Reds at their ground last weekend, when they also netted three goals, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus during the second half.
It turned out to be a flawless evening for Nottingham Forest. The coach could withdraw Murillo with the match long since sewn up and later introduced teenage full-back Jimmy Sinclair for his first-team debut. He talked about the club legends providing “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the current crop showed they are able of a few nuggets of excitement, too.
