Heat and Trail Blazers Secure First Wins After Recent Detentions

NBA game action

Miami put up 86 first-half points versus the Memphis Grizzlies

The Heat earned a crushing 146 to 114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first NBA game after player Rozier was arrested over suspected illegal gambling.

Trail Blazers coach Billups was additionally arrested in connection with a broad FBI probe into sports betting. The two individuals deny the allegations.

However, the Heat were focused as they put up 86 first-half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later stated Rozier had the support of the team.

"We support him. Complete backing," Bam said. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."

Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is very dear to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.

"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through this."

The Trail Blazers also secured their first game after the arrests, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' absence and guiding the team to a decisive 139-119 victory against the Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Billups and how he coached," Splitter said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests

Speaking about the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

The commissioner further mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"We were informed by the authorities and the gambling firms," he added.

"We investigated that situation and were open about it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.

"So, we've been working with them from that point. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an charge.

"And 30 months later, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Terry.

"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
