Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is exiting the board at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became public.
Summers commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their progress".
Summers, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
The recently released messages showed that Summers exchanged messages with the financier until the eve of Epstein's 2019 apprehension for accused trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the technology organization expressed it respected the economist's decision to resign.
"We value his numerous inputs and the perspective he offered to the directors," OpenAI stated.
This news follows after the entire Congress of the US legislature decided on this week to approve a measure that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will afterward head to the administration of US President Donald Trump for signature. He has stated he plans to sign the bill, after reversing his position on the matter following pushback from his followers.
A batch of Epstein-related messages released by the House Oversight Committee recently referenced numerous prominent individuals in the Epstein's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.
The emails indicated that Summers and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to introduce the official to notable world leaders.
After the emails were made available with the public, Summers said he took "complete accountability for my poor decision to maintain communicating with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he hoped "to rebuild trust and fix connections with the people most important to me".
The economist served in leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He presided over the institution from 2001 to 2006 and is still a academic there. When stating his departure from public commitments earlier on Monday, he stated he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Following his announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, verified that he was not affiliated with the organization.
The former official entered the directorate of the AI company, which creates the language model, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its chief executive Sam Altman.
