Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

This news arrives just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
